Welcome to Light of Guidance
Light of Guidance (LOG) is dedicated to the education of children in a holistic manner that develops a deeper understanding of the tenants of Islam and the role it plays in everyday life. The aim is to ensure that the children of our community are equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate their way through the complexities of modern life, based on the teachings of Quran as explained by Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) and his Ahl-al-Bayt (AS).
In addition, developing strong social connections between children will help the next generation develop a strong community.
The Curriculum
The madrassa aims to provide opportunities for students through a structured curriculum. This includes, Salat(Prayers), Quran, Akhlaq (Mannerism), Aqaid (Theology), Fiqh (Jurispurdance) and Tareekh (Islamic History) in the light of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) and his Ahl-al-Bayt(AS).
In addition to Qur’an, there are 4 main subject areas. These are Theology (Aqa’id), Jurisprudence (Fiqh), Islamic History and Islamic morals and manners (Akhlaq) across all levels during the year.
Qur’an – the syllabus is structured for students in each level in accordance to their ability to recognise and read Quranic text. The syllabus incorporates learning to recognise Arabic letters and words, Quran recitation, Arabic grammar (Tajweed) and memorisation of short Quranic Surahs.
Theology (Aqa’id) – the syllabus is structured in accordance with the Twelver Shia doctrine which contains five key principles of faith, also known as Usul al-din. Our focus is not only to ensure that our students understand the fundamental religious beliefs of a Muslim, but also to enable them to reflect and reason about their beliefs, and to explain and establish the principles of Islamic teachings based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) and the Ahl-al-Bayt (AS).
Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) is understanding of the divine Islamic law as revealed in the Quran by Allah (SWT). Our syllabus is structured to help students understand the Islamic rulings in the light of the teachings and practices of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) and his holy Ahl al-Bayt (AS). Our focus is to equip the children with sufficient knowledge to understand what constitutes Halal and Haram as they grow-up in society influenced by western morals and principles.
Islamic History is also taught at great depth beginning with the history of Prophets (AS) and the Imams of Ahl al bayt (AS). The syllabus is structured for students to understand the message of Allah from the first Prophet and the connection between the messages brought by all the Prophets until the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW). We unpack the life of each of the Imams of Ahl al bayt (AS) along with the social and the political context at the times until the occultation of the 12th Imam.
Islamic morals & manners (Akhlaq) are crucial ingredients for character building. Teaching good morals and manners is one of the most important duties prescribed by Allah (SWT). Our syllabus is structured to teach the students concepts of morality and manners from an Islamic perspective and the importance of their application in developing human virtue and perfection, following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) and His holy Progeny (AS).
Prayers (Salat) and Supplications (Duas)
In addition to these subjects, students are also taught Namaz, Wudhu, Duas and Ziaraats.
Assessment
A variety of assessments and exams are held throughout the year in all the classes in order to monitor the progress of the students. At the end of each year we hold an award ceremony to recognise and celebrate student achievements and effort throughout the year.
Structure
The minimum age to enroll at LOG is 4 years. Our classes are structured into 4 levels. Students are allocated to a level based on their age group as shown in the table below.
Level | Age range |
1 | 4 to 6 years |
2 | 7 to 9 years |
3 | 10 to 13 years |
4 | 14 + |
In order to place them in a level best suited to their learning, an initial assessment of each student is conducted at admission. This is based on an understanding of Qur’an, Theology (Aqa’id), Jurisprudence (Fiqh), Islamic morals & manners (Akhlaq) and Islamic History.
